One would think that with all the research done to try and link midlife weight gain in women to changing hormone levels (menopause) science would have uncovered, or at least theorized, a solid explanation by now. But after reading the results of study after study, all that research has only proven that weight gain is largely due to lower activity levels and poor nutrition.
So, scientists have now turned their attention to uncovering why many women in midlife start to accumulate that added weight as fat in the abdominal area. While fluctuating hormone levels, particularly lower estrogen levels, may be partially responsible for the redistribution of fat to the belly area, research is demonstrating that estrogen is not the only hormone responsible for this phenomenon.
It turns out that stress and stress related hormones have been linked to excessive fat storage around the abdominal area. How you ask? Apparently it’s a result of the flight or fight instinct that our distant ancestors were so dependent upon for survival.
During times of stress, mental or physical, the body releasescorticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH). This generates a release of the hormones adrenaline and cortisol.
The adrenaline released results in instant energy and increasedstrength. This is what allows people to do superhuman things, like the woman that lifts the car that fell on her son.
Meanwhile, cortisol is responsible for bringing the body back intobalance after the stressful event. In other words, cortisol’s job is to stimulate the appetite to replace the carbohydrates and fat that should of been burned while fleeing or fighting the stressful event. However, as most of you know, today’s sources of stress rarely result in calorie expenditure.
Stress today is more likely to result in people sitting with frustration or anger while reaching for something to eat. But the body doesn’t know that it did not expend any calories during the most recent stressful event. So cortisol is still expected to perform by increasing the appetite for carbohydrates and fat.
A study conducted by researchers at Yale University andpublished in the September 2000 issue of Psychosomatic Medicinesuggests that cortisol may actually cause fat to be stored in the center of the body. Couple that fact with the fact that the fat cells located in the belly area are richer with stress hormone receptors than fat cells located elsewhere and you have a recipe for abdominal obesity.
If the added belly fat is not distressing enough, it should also be noted that belly fat has been linked to an increased risk of developing heart disease.
Never fear, there is a way to combat belly fat generated from stress, it’s exercise. Exercise works to prevent belly fat generated from stress, by reducing the levels of stress hormones in your body. That’s right, vigorous exercise generates beta-endorphins. These endorphins are responsible for calming the body down and reducing the level of stress hormones in the body!
How much exercise does one need to combat belly fat in times of stress? I suggest 20-30 minutes of a physical activity you enjoy. Whether it be a 20-30 minute vigorous walk or a weight training session. Just so long as you get the body moving and releasing those beta-endorphins.
Of course exercise also helps to combat belly fat simply by burningcalories. This way when cortisol increases your appetite you will have expended the carbohydrate and fat calories during your workout.Allowing cortisol do its job and preventing those extra calories frombeing stored on your belly.
But do not go overboard, exercising too hard for too long can alsogenerate cortisol. This defeats the purpose of using exercise to combat cortisol and its belly fat generating affects.
So, the next time you start to get stressed out, instead of sitting and chewing food in your frustration, get up and take a 10 minute vigorous walk. This will help beat those stress hormones by releasing beta-endorphins and taking your mind off the thing stressing you out.

Losing belly fat today seems to be a hot topic. How to lose belly fat fast and keep it off is especially challenging.
My recent trips to the beach suggest several things. People really DO NOT care how they look, they just don’t realize how far they have evolved or they don’t know what to do about what they know is a health risk. The first question to answer is…how bad is the belly fat? The second question is…how did I get this way? Once we have answered those questions we can then figure out the best route or remedy to Lose Belly Fat Fast and forever.
Here are a few simple observations that may provide some quick answers:
Check that closet. How many pants (or dresses) do you have hanging in your closet you no longer can wear? Yet you are holding on to them because you believe some day you’ll do something about it and be able to fit back into them.Do you tie your shoes differently or with a little more effort these days?If you have a dog is it overweight? If so chances are neither of you are getting enough exercise to Lose The Belly Fat.Do you watch more TV than you used to? How’s that couch treating you?Do you always look for the closest parking spot or always take the elevator instead of the stairs (even to the 2nd floor)?Do you say you need or want to start exercising more (even if it’s a walk) but use the excuse you just don’t have the time? Yet there always seems to be enough time to get on Face Book, My Space or watch TV for three hours a night.Do you drink more alcohol than you used to? It’s called a “beer belly” for a reason.
Obviously, there are many other indicators of determining your belly fat ratio but those listed above should get you thinking.
OK, if you’ve figured out you have too much belly fat (how hard was that?) then just how did we get this way?
First of all it’s important to understand that not all humans are created equal. Ever notice how that tennis partner or golfing buddy eats what ever he/she wants and they don’t ever worry about the belly fat? Well, that’s because belly fat has a lot to do with biology. Every person is equipped with their own personal thermostat. Fat among other things fuels that thermostat. It is called the hypothalamus and this thermostat regulates things like body temperature, arterial pressure, sleeping, eating just to name a few of its functions.
Also, historically, man (and woman) stored fat seasonally. When it got colder the body reacted by storing more fat for warmth. When it got warmer the body burned the fat for energy. While that still does occur to some extent the body doesn’t need to do that as much because we are able to trick it with AC/heat. However, the thermostat still affects the burning of calories.That said…. one thing stills holds true. Anyone who takes in more calories than they burn… gets the belly fat.
Some of us prove to be more efficient at burning the calories (energy) than others and age, sex, weight, genetics and physical activity will all play a role in how that’s done. But, I emphasize again, take in more calories than you burn and walla… BELLY FAT!
Simple example:
Eat one carrot a day for a year = 11,000+ calories = 3 extra poundsEat one candy bar a day for a year = 179,000 calories = 51 extra pounds
Of course, we don’t store every calorie we take in and our body burns calories at different rates depending on where these calories come from. Unfortunately for us the belly fat calories are stored easiest and burned for fuel LAST.
An example of how the body uses fuel in order:

The body will use every available source of fuel BEFORE it uses fat. That’s why the belly fat gain is often seen even on a low fat diet.
So, that brings us back to the simple equation:
Calories being burned needs to exceed calories being taken in if losing belly fat forever is the goal.
And that can be done two ways and only two ways:
reduce the calories consumed (diet)increase the burn (exercise)
It ain’t rocket science. The question is which diets are best and what exercise programs are most efficient.
