Caffeine Side Effects – In humans, caffeine acts as a central nervous system stimulant. It gives the temporary effects of warding off drowsiness and restoring alertness. It acts as a psychoactive stimulant drug. These drugs effects the central nervous system where it alters brain function, resulting in changes in perception, mood, consciousness and behavior.
Another Caffeine Side Effects is that is acts like a mild diuretic. A diuretic is a drug that elevates the rate of urination, and increases the exertion of water from our bodies.
Caffeine can be an addictive substance. Some of the withdrawal symptoms include: headache, tiredness, no energy, depression, and irritability. Most withdrawal symptoms typically begin within 12 to 24 hours after the last caffeine consumption. The peak intensity occurs at 20-51 hours. The total withdrawal symptoms last from 2 to 9 days.
Caffeine Side Effects and bone loss. One study found that postmenopausal women who consumed more than 300mg per day of caffeine lost more bone in the spine than women who consumed less than 300 mg per day. Even though this study is fascinating…more evidence is needed to make a definite decision about the role of caffeine and osteoporosis.
Some studies suggest that caffeine contributes to weight gain by increasing stress hormones.
How about the caffeine effects on children! In a study done by the National Institute of Mental Health, 8 to 13 year olds who consumed high doses of caffeine were more restless in school. One third of them were hyper enough to meet the criteria for attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity. A Stanford study showed 5th and 6th graders that typically consume an average of 28mg of caffeine per day. These students were deprived of caffeine and the results included: trouble thinking clearly, no energy, and getting angry. I recommend restricting your child’s caffeine intake to consume as little as possible.
Is it possible to overdose on caffeine? Yes it is! Doses ranging from 250 to 750mg (2 to 7 cups of coffee) can produce restlessness, nausea, headache, tense muscles, and irregular heart beat. Doses over 750 mg (7 cups of coffee) can cause an anxiety attack, ringing ears, and light flashes.
Although caffeine is probably the most widely used drug, there are too many studies that show the negative caffeine effects for humans. Anything that effects my thoughts and moods, or dilates my blood vessels increasing blood pressure, or that increases gastric acid that causes ulcers…….does not sound like anything good that I want in my body! Besides, nature produces this chemical to kill insects that ingest it! So, I say…caffeine free is for me!
